What You Need to Apply
- Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity
- Passport-sized photograph (digital)
- Return or onward flight ticket
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking confirmation)
- Credit or debit card for online payment
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate (if arriving from an endemic country)
Yellow Fever Certificate
A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from or have transited through a yellow fever endemic country (including Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda). If you are flying direct from Europe, the Middle East, or southern Africa, this is generally not required — but we recommend carrying your certificate regardless, as requirements can be enforced at the border officer's discretion.
Recommended Vaccinations
There are no mandatory vaccinations for Zanzibar (apart from yellow fever for travellers from endemic regions), but the following are strongly recommended. Consult your travel health clinic at least 6 weeks before departure.
| Vaccination | Importance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hepatitis A | Highly Recommended | |
| Typhoid | Highly Recommended | |
| Tetanus / Diphtheria | Recommended | |
| Hepatitis B | Recommended | |
| Rabies | Consider | |
| Cholera | Low Risk |
Malaria Prevention
Zanzibar is in a malaria zone. While the risk on the island is lower than mainland Tanzania, antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended. Consult your doctor at least 6 weeks before travel to discuss the best option for you.
Medication
Common options include Malarone (atovaquone-proguanil), Doxycycline, or Mefloquine. Each has different dosing schedules and side effect profiles.
Bite Prevention
Use DEET-based insect repellent (30-50%), sleep under treated mosquito nets, and wear long sleeves and trousers at dusk and dawn.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and should be considered essential. Ensure your policy covers:
- Medical expenses (minimum $100,000 coverage)
- Medical evacuation to Dar es Salaam or Nairobi (air ambulance)
- Trip cancellation and interruption
- Lost or delayed baggage
- Personal liability
- Adventure activities if applicable (diving, water sports)
General Health Tips
Drinking Water
Tap water is not safe to drink in Zanzibar. Always use sealed bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth. Most hotels provide complimentary bottled water.
Sun Protection
Zanzibar sits close to the equator. The tropical sun is extremely intense, even on cloudy days. Use SPF 50+ sunscreen, wear a hat, and stay hydrated.
Food Safety
Eat at reputable restaurants and hotels. Avoid raw salads and unpeeled fruit from street vendors. Seafood should be freshly cooked. Most tourist establishments maintain high hygiene standards.
Medical Facilities
Zanzibar has basic medical facilities. For serious conditions, evacuation to Dar es Salaam or Nairobi is standard. Carry a basic first-aid kit and any personal medications you need.
